The Whole Person Spread — Six Facets, One Mirror

Every other spread on this site starts from a situation. The Whole Person starts from you. It's our own layout: six positions, each aimed at a different facet of the person doing the asking. It exists because the most useful readings we've ever seen weren't about the job or the relationship at all. They were about the reader.

The six facets: Head, the story you're telling yourself. Heart, what's underneath that story. Ground, your actual circumstances — body, money, home, time. Shadow, what you're avoiding. Gift, a strength already in your hands that this season hasn't used. And Threshold, where you're being invited to grow — invited, not pushed.

No slot in this spread asks about the future, other people's intentions, or events. It's a portrait, not a plot. That makes it the least fortune-telling layout we offer and, in our experience, the one that produces the longest journal entries.

The positions

  1. 1 · Head

The story you're telling yourself. How does this card sit next to that story — confirming it, or poking a hole in it?

  2. 2 · Heart

What's underneath the story — the feeling you haven't fully let in yet. What does this card give it a name for?

  3. 3 · Ground

Your actual circumstances — body, money, home, time. What does this card catch about the ground you're standing on?

  4. 4 · Shadow

What you've been avoiding. Read the card there — gently, but read it.

  5. 5 · Gift

A strength already in your hands that this season hasn't used yet. Where is it, and what's it for?

  6. 6 · Threshold

Where you're being invited to grow — invited, not pushed. What would stepping there ask of you?

Reading it as one thing

The designed tension is between Head and Heart: the story you tell and the feeling underneath it rarely match, and the distance between those two cards is usually the reading. Ground then acts as the reality check — whatever the story and the feeling claim, what do your actual circumstances say?

Shadow and Gift are a pair too, and often a startling one: the strength in the Gift slot is frequently the exact tool for the thing the Shadow slot names. Threshold reads last, and reads best as a question you carry out of the session rather than answer inside it. If the six cards were a committee describing you, Threshold is the one speaking quietly from the corner — worth leaning in for.

When to reach for it

Seasons, not situations: birthdays, new years, the week after something ends, the month before something starts. It pairs naturally with a monthly review — six cards, one page of writing, once a month is a practice that compounds. We'd suggest not running it more often than that; a portrait re-taken daily stops being a portrait.

Questions people ask

Where does this spread come from?
We built it. It draws on the same humanistic tradition the rest of the site leans on (the idea that the cards mirror the person, not the future), but the six-facet structure is original to Tarot Digest. If it resembles anything, it's the shape of a good journaling session.
What if the Shadow card is frightening?
The Shadow slot asks about avoidance, so an uncomfortable card there is the spread working as designed. Read it gently and concretely: not "what terrible thing is in me" but "what specifically have I been walking around instead of through?" The card is a door, and you decide the pace.
Why is this spread premium?
The interactive draw and the six-facet AI reflection are part of premium, which hasn't opened yet. The method is free: this page describes every position, and it works beautifully with a physical deck and a notebook tonight. Premium adds the drawn layout, the reflection across all six facets, and the saved entry.
